MARINOL has been proven to be effective in:

• A study of 454 patients with cancer who received a total of 750 courses of chemotherapy for various malignancies
  • MARINOL reduced nausea and vomiting in about two thirds of these treatment courses
    
    
• A 6-week study of 139 patients who had acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and appetite loss associated with weight loss
  • MARINOL provided statistically significant improvement in appetite compared with placebo (a sugar pill)
  • Reduction in nausea and trends toward improved body weight and mood were also seen

After completing this study, 93 patients were allowed to continue treatment with MARINOL for up to 12 months, in which there was sustained improvement in appetite.

MARINOL is contraindicated in any patient who has a history of hypersensitivity to any cannabinoid or sesame oil. Warn patients not to drive, operate machinery, or engage in hazardous activity until they establish they can tolerate MARINOL and perform such tasks.

MARINOL should be used with caution in patients with a history of seizure disorder; patients with cardiac disorders; patients with a history of substance abuse (including alcohol abuse or dependence); patients with mania, depression, or schizophrenia (along with careful psychiatric monitoring); patients taking sedatives, hypnotics, or other psychoactive drugs; and in elderly patients, pregnant patients, nursing mothers, or pediatric patients.

The most common adverse effects probably related to MARINOL are dizziness, euphoria, paranoid reaction, somnolence, thinking abnormal, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting.
